History of International Cooperation

Under conditions of contemporary globalization between states and activation of integration processes in the educational and scientific areas international cooperation takes on special significance and is an integral part of Kharkiv National University of Urban Economy.
The main goal of the University’s international activities is to develop strategic and tactical solutions for the purpose of growth of its international prestige on the basis of unity of all departments’ educational, scientific and investment activities, recognition of the University’s authority in the international educational services, research and development market.
The University’s international activity during the recent years has been subject to the task assigned: to create the triangle of knowledge “education-science-innovation” by means of constructing the new ones and further development of the already existing contacts with foreign partners, their own programs and structures of the international orientation. In scope of understanding the role of international cooperation and the importance of entering both the European and the global domain of higher education, the University pays great attention to the development of international relations.
The main areas of educational cooperation are focused on the harmonization of academic programs and the University’s teaching practices with the education system of leading universities of the EU.
During the period 2004 - 2007, the University worked on the project "Management of human resources." The idea of the project: special textbooks and teachers preparation for students teaching a distance learning course. In 2007 this work has been successfully completed and all project textbooks are in the University Distance Learning Centre.
The project of the Tempus programme "Higher Education and Labour Market in the Field of Environment" (2003-2006).We have analyzed the requirements of the environment field at the Ukrainian labor market and improved educational programs relative to the specialty of "Ecology and environmental protection" in order to bring them closer to the EU labor market.
The University established a career support center "HELMET" which informs students about vacancies and provides tutorial on employment of students. The project has successfully passed the EU monitoring.
The TEMPUS programme "New businesses technology implementation into environmental activities in Ukraine" (2003 - 2006). Nowadays there are some practical recommendations developed for the entrepreneurship in the environment - a "green business". Counseling center "SUSBUS" E provides consulting services in environmental entrepreneurship for students intending to start a business after their graduation.
The TEMPUS programme "Improvement of educational programs on environmental management" (2009-2011). The main objective of the project is the harmonization of academic programs within eco-management with the environmental education system at the EU universities. In terms of this project 17 teaching and learning materials, which had been scheduled, have been developed in conjunction with the leading scholars and teachers of the European higher education institutions.
The TEMPUS programme "Environmental education in the area of environmental management" (2011 - 2013). It is being planned to develop advanced programs for undergraduate and graduate students of the academic fields specified, the implementation of the joint project on postgraduate students’ training as well as writing five manuals for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Erasmus Mundus Programme. ICTS Lot 6 for students’ mobility. Participants: 5 EU universities and universities of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. Due to the foregoing TEMPUS projects and the financial support of the EU, 27 teachers and 27 students went through an internship, 15 international conferences were held in 2004 – 2011.  
The main subjects of the internship were:
  • updating of educational programs and curriculums in compliance with the requirements of the Bologna Process;
  • learning the organization and content of practical training of the students;
  • databases and their systems in teaching and researching practice in the field of environmental sciences.
In 2004 the UNEP project of Global International Water Assessment was launched, in which the University was asked to lead a group of international experts from countries to which belong the basins of the Black, Caspian and Aral seas. A comparative analysis of water quality and actual environmental problems of fixed regions has been conducted, and some measures for ecological restoration of aquatic ecosystems of the seas have been offered.
According to the 6-EC framework program project "Bioplateau for Murmansk region of Russia" was performed in collaboration with the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia and Russia. The technology of the bioplateau for the northern climate of the Kola Peninsula was adjusted. The project was finished in 2005.
According to the cooperation program with France, the project "Dnepr" is being performed, which aims at developing a joint monitoring process of pollution of rivers by pharmaceutical industry waste products. The project is scheduled for 2009 - 2011 years.
During the past eight years 12 academy students have been trained at higher educational institutions of the European Union within the framework of international educational projects on the TEMPUS-TACIS programme in which the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Cities was a coordinating agency - "Environment and Energy» (T_JEP-10485-98 "Environment and Energy"), “Higher education and the labor market in the area of ​​environmental protection” (UM_JEP-23060-2002 HELMET) and "The implementation of sustainable development models in business sphere of Ukraine» (IB_JEP-23100-2002 SUSBUS).
With the support of the British Council in Ukraine and in collaboration with the urban youth organization (MMMO) "New Resources" the Ukrainian-British seminar on "Energy: Nowadays and Tomorrow" was organized by the University in 2007 , as well as the exhibition "SeverYugZapadVostok", dedicated to the pollution of atmosphere by carbon monoxide. The British Ambassador in Ukraine, the heads of regional and city administrations, the leading scientists of the region took part in the seminar and exhibition. Senior students participated actively in organizing and conducting these activities.
In 2006, the University and the MMMO "New Resources" fulfilled jointly the international project "Building the resilience of the region by implementing green business" subsidized by the British Council, results of which (manuals, videos in business environmental management) are used for training students according to the experimental schedules (professional area of the "Environmental enterprise"). Senior students were also involved in implementation of the project.
